Music is an important part of school life at Woodlands Park.  All children in Key Stage 1 and 2 have a weekly music lesson taught by a specialist music teacher.

Children in Key stage 1 are taught the basic elements of music related to their topics through storytelling, with singing and instrumental accompaniments.  They also begin to compose simple rhythms and melodies using a variety of tuned and untuned  percussion.

In Key Stage 2 the children are taught music through topic related activities and also whole class instrumental lessons.  They learn to master the basics of the violin, ukulele, djembe drums, recorder, flute (fifes) and steel pans.  They use these skills to compose music of their own using correct musical notations and relate to the effective use of elements  (eg dynamics, tempo and pitch).

At Woodlands we are keen to give opportunities for our talented musicians to flourish.  We run a school orchestra and a KS2 school choir all year round.  In addition, there are other ensemble clubs eg ukulele, Taiko drumming and rock bands.  A choir and recorder club is also held at lunch times  for Key stage 1 pupils.  All Key Stage 2 children are given the opportunity to have peripatetic music lessons with one of the many teachers we have visiting the school.  These teachers are specialists in their field and offer individual or small group lessons for singing, drums, guitar, piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone and violin which incur a charge.

Musicians are given the opportunity to perform regularly at Woodlands Park.  We take part in an annual concert with other local primary schools in Ivybridge.  We also hold summer and Christmas concerts and often have musical groups playing at school events.  We regularly sing and perform at local events eg Lee Mill Carol Singing, Ivydene Residential Home for the Elderly and we run a memory café singing workshop in school every half term for local people who suffer from Dementia.
