Bugtastic Encounters

When the Zoo came to School!

The Little Dormice and Woodmice at Woodlands Park had a bug-tastic minibeast encounter with Dartmoor Zoo, getting hands on and being able to hold or touch a Tiger Land snail, a stick insect, some cockroaches and Dylan the Gecko who eats minibeasts. Kirsten from Dartmoor Zoo shared some amazing minibeast facts. The Tiger Land snail has 250,000 teeth on its tongue and its breaths from a small hole under its shell. Stick insects have wings but only the males are able to fly. They can moult between 9-15 times during their lifetime. Cockroaches are very clean and under their armour they have small mites that eat all the dirt they get on them. Dylan has sticky feet to help him climb trees. He can drop his tail to run away from predators but he can only do this once because his tail will not regrow.
