Music Café - May 2016
Woodlands Park Primary School hosted their first Music Café on the 20th April for members of the community living with memory loss. Selected pupils were on hand to join the fun and offer support, if needed, during the musical activities which included singing, drumming and playing the steel pans.
The Music Café is run by specialist Music teacher Debbie Down in collaboration with Ivybridge Memory Café. "Musical aptitude and music appreciation are two of the last remaining abilities in people living with dementia” said Debbie "Because these two abilities remain long after other abilities have passed and Music is an excellent way to reach beyond the disease and reach the person. These workshops also give the children the opportunity to develop their empathy and understanding of dementia and become friends with the older generation." All the children in Key Stage 2 at Woodlands Park have had an information session run by the Alzheimer's Society on becoming a "Dementia Friend".
